Monday, November 28, 2011 - Start Word Project
Typing test today in TypingMaster (Netiquette, 3 minutes). Today we covered how to use a web browser. We started a brochure project. You may choose a university or a Qatari organization and you will create a brochure about it. You will need to meet all of the objectives listed in this document - Objective List.pdf. For this project, you will not be allowed to use any templates.
For the University brochure:
The audience will be other ABP students and high school students.
You must include admission requirements in a table, information on the university, the city, the dorms, degrees offered, student life, tuition costs.
Include anything else you can think of that would be of interest to your audience.
For the Qatari organization (charity):
The audience will be the English-speaking population of Qatar.
You must include how the organization got its name, what it does, how it helps people, how people can get involved in helping out, how it is funded.
Include anything else you can think of that would be of interest to your audience.

Monday, November 21, 2011 - Start Resume
Today we started the CV Project. You are to create a CV or resume to be sent off to universities along with your applications. This is the sample provided by Mrs. Ellenore: ABPResume_Format_2011.pdf. Click here to see Ms. Ellenore's wiki for information on colleges. Your resume must have all of this information at a minimum. You may choose to use a template or create your own format and style for your resume. You may search online for free templates to download if you prefer. Here are two other sample resumes a student received from TAMU-Q: CV1 sample from TAMU.PDF and CV2 sample from TAMU.PDF. Use these for content, not necessarily formats.
Homework:
Print out your completed resume and slide it under my door so I can edit it. Check the box on my door for your resume and then make the suggested changes. By next class email me the FINISHED resume.

Wednesday, November 16, 2011 - Finish Unit E - Tables
Today we finished the unit on tables using the second textbook. We completed the last four objectives on pages 114 - 121 (Word Unit E Objectives 5-8.pdf (Chicago Ad Budget)) in class. Submit the file (named correctly!) to me when you are finished with it.

Monday, November 14, 2011 - Start Unit E - Tables
Today we started the unit on tables using the second textbook, Unit E starting on page 105 (Word Unit E Objectives 1-4.pdf (Chicago Ad Budget)). We completed the first four objectives in class (pgs 106-113). We also did the weekly typing test in TypingMaster (3 minutes, title: The Life of Calamity Jane).

Today we practiced the skills learned in Unit D by working on Project D - Blue Chair Catering in SAM.
Monday, October 31, 2011 - Continue Unit D
We started with the Astronauts typing test (self-assessment) for 3 minutes. We continued unit D with a discussion of how to insert tables and clip art. We continued slides # 33 - 41 in the PowerPoint (Word 2007 Unit D.ppt). In class we started to complete pages Word 92 and 94 using the Footprints newsletter document.
Homework:
Finish Word pages 92-95 (Tables-ClipArt.docx) using the Footprints document. This should complete this document. - due Thursday, Nov 3.
BEGINNING OF THIRD MARKING PERIOD Wednesday, October 26, 2011 - Continue Unit D
We worked through pages 82, 84 and 86 of the unit today covering page breaks, columns and hyphenating, and inserting page numbers. Monday, October 24, 2011 - Start Unit D
Today we started Word Unit D on Formatting Documents. We discussed setting document margins, dividing a document into sections. Using this PowerPoint (Word 2007 Unit D.ppt), we covered slides #1-13. The starting document is WD D-1.docx (Footprints). Make sure to save the file using the new naming convention (click here if you forgot it). If you would like extra practice, using the WD D-1.docx document above, make the changes as instructed on pages Word 78 and 80 (Margins-Sections-PageBreaks.docx) .
October 19, 2011 - Finish Unit C- Borders/Shading and Citations/Endnotes/Footnotes/Bibliography
Today, we discussed how to add borders and shading to text and how to use endnotes, footnotes, citations, and how to create a bibliography or works cited section of a paper. We continued working with the "Last Minute Travel Deals" document.
SPECIAL NOTE: From now on, I will ask you to name all files in a specific way. Do not include spaces or hyphens (dashes). This naming convention is what I will expect for any documents submitted to me via email (not through SAM). classcode_lastname_firstname_title.extension. If you have class with me first period, then your classcode is E1. If you have class with me third period, then your class code is E3. For example: E3_almannai_ahmed_LastMinuteTravelDeals.docx would be the Last Minute Travel Deals Word document by Ahmed Al-Mannai in my third period Essentials class. If you have any questions about this please ask me.

Today, we discussed indents and their uses as well as how to best use numbered lists and bulleted lists. We continued working with the "Last Minute Travel Deals" document.
Note: if you made changes to this document in class, remove those changes so you start with the document as it was at the beginning of class.

October 12, 2011 - Continue Unit C
Today we discussed how to change line and paragraph spacing, align paragraphs, and work with tabs. October 10, 2011 - Start Word Unit C
Typing Test in TypingMaster (Self-Assessment, Text is "The Little Match Girl", Time is 4 minutes). Today we started Unit C in Word on Formatting Text and Paragraphs. We discussed formatting with fonts, using the Format Painter, and changing line and paragraph spacing. We also discussed tips for formatting. We covered slides #1-14 and we did pages Word 50, 52, and 54 from the textbook in class practice. Here is the PowerPoint: Word 2007 Unit C.ppt
Homework:
Finish the exercises on pages Word 50, 52, and 54 and save your work. We will use the same document for next class so make sure to bring it to class with you.

Today we finished discussing the last bits of editing Word documents (check spelling and grammar, research information, and add hyperlinks) using the same PowerPoint slides from last class.

Today we did a typing test at www.typingtest.com and we discussed the first part of Unit B in Word using this Word 2007 Unit B for Essential.ppt.
We changed the Typing policy to the following:
Weekly test via www.typingtest.com on Monday and I will record scores.
WHEN you can type more than 30 wpm (words per minute) with an accuracy of 90% or better for three weeks in a row, THEN you will no longer have the typing requirement of 2 hours per week.
However, if your test results for any week drop below the required time and accuracy, you will be required to complete the 2 hour requirement for that week.
This is NOT due by Oct 5 but is due by Oct 7th. This is so you can ask questions in class if you need to.
Log in to SAM and take the quiz as before.

Today, we did an exercise to learn the correct names of the parts of the Word program window using Word Window.docx. We walked through the project you will do in SAM and how to submit it. Please remember that for the project you will have 3 attempts to submit it for the highest score possible.

Highlight the items that are not clear to you. Bring those items to the next class for discussion.
